Great Northern Cookbook

Format: 4 x 60'

Channel: Channel 5 / Food Network

If you think food in the North is just pies... think again! In a mouthwatering new four-part series for Channel 5, trained chef and celebrated cheesemaker Sean Wilson (Coronation Street's Martin Platt) explores the beautiful, varied and underappreciated culinary heritage of the north of England.

Sean leads us along trails of culinary delight throughout the North: sourcing ingredients, exploring events, fairs and festivals, and meeting the men and women keeping the region’s traditions alive. And Sean is kept on his toes throughout with a series of food challenges, which put even his award-winning skills to the test…

EPISODE GUIDE

Episode 1 sees Sean travel to Whitby where he’s challenged to catch and cook the ultimate fish and chips. And in Morpeth, can Sean convince a troupe of committed offal-haters to sample his stuffed lamb’s hearts?

In Episode 2, Sean attempts to break the world record for the largest Cumberland sausage ever made – will he succeed? In Morecambe, he learns the traditional methods of salmon fishing. And at Wordsworth House in the Lake District he attempts to recreate an 18th Century recipe, without poisoning members of the National Trust!

Sean is aboard the Scarborough Flyer for Episode 3 – will his high-speed cooking impress local dignitaries? And from black pudding in Blackpool to market food in Manchester, Sean takes on the locals in celebration of the best of Northern cuisine.

Finally in Episode 4, Sean explores the history behind staples of the North: pork pies, sticky toffee pudding, and the ubiqitous Yorkshire pudding. How will Sean’s 18th Century Yorkshire pud recipe go down?

The book inspired by the series, The Great Northern Cookbook, published by Hodder & Stoughton, is available now available at Amazon and all good bookshops.

PRESS

Daily Express: Critics’ Choice / Pick Of The Day: ★★★★ “Very few ex-soap stars have gone on to become award-winning creators of cheese… It’s not cheese alone that Sean is mad about, however, as we’ll see in this colourful new series, celebrating all that’s great about northern English food.”

Mail On Sunday: Pick Of The Day: “…this four-part homage to the heritage and phenomenal flavours of the North’s favourite foods.”
